SUPER MARIO 64: How 3D revolutionized gaming

Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform game for the Nintendo 64 and the first Super Mario game to feature 3D gameplay. It was developed and published y nintendo. The super mario series goes back all the way to 1985, when the first Super Mario Bros. was released. This was a simple 2D game where the player had to keep moving to the right and evading obstacles in order to get to the finish line of each level, to this day speedruners have optimized to perfection, with the world record run being under 5 minutes total. The series expanded into dozens of games and spin-offs, which are the reason we know Mario as the staple in gaming he is today.

When the N64 released in 1996, it was marketed next to what was said to be the biggest leap of gaming ever, Super Mario 64, a platformer where instead of only going forward and backwards, you are now going north, south, east, west, up and down. The 3D space where MArio could freely move amazed everyone, with ot being something normal for us nowadays. With many levels hadcrafted to perfection, an amazing soundtrack, and revolutionary gameplay, Mario 64 quickly became a fan favorite.

I believe the thing that grabbed players the most is how fluid and free it feels to move around with Mario, he can jump, slide, spin jump, ground pound, triple jump, he can slide in the air to reach further, if you don´t have much space you can go for the backflip, and if you want to cover a lot of space you can go for a long jump. Every player can go through the game differently depending on their skill level. This makes the game infinietly replayable, and for that reason Mario 64 is still one of the best reviewed games in history. I wasn´t even alive when this game came out, but thanks to my sister who played when she was a kid, I was introduced to it, and it being one of the first game I played, it is one of the main reasons for my love for videogames. Even years after it´s release, MArio 64 keeps making an impact in many peoples lifes.
