Market in Brazil wins award for best reconstruction after COVID-19

The first prize went to Nova Ceasa, a fruit and vegetable market project in the state of Piauí, located in the northeast of Brazil. The center distributes 35 tons of fruits and vegetables to supply the area and guarantees the livelihood of more than 700 merchants.

One of the most popular questions people asked themselves was whether infrastructure could be better recovered after the coronavirus pandemic. This is the question posed by the Economic Commission for Europe in the 2021 edition of its infrastructure award. The agency sought to find the best people-oriented Public-Private Partnership projects that contribute to «rebuilding better» after Covid-19.

In Nova Ceasa you can find fruits, vegetables, spices, crafts, seafood, flowers, plants and people who seek to improve their quality of life.

Second place went jointly to a light rail project on the Spanish island of Tenerife and a regional development program in Caraga, Philippines.

The Tenerife Tram was inaugurated in 2007 and its launch has not only united the different neighborhoods of the Metropolitan Area, but has also connected the whole of society.

  • The selected projects had to meet the following characteristics:
  • stakeholder and community empowerment
  • reduction of poverty and inequalities
  • empowerment of women
  • improvement of environmental sustainability
  • reducing climate change and improving resilience

The competition, which used the evaluation methodology of the People-first Commission to rate the projects, also served to test their effectiveness and use.

The winners were selected from a total of 66 projects from 25 countries and 881 electronic votes were cast.

All projects were recognized by the jury for their contribution to reducing poverty, creating local jobs, improving health services and food safety, reducing waste and using renewable energy and aspiring to carbon neutrality.
