Why is student’s day celebrated?

On May 23 of each year, the student’s day is celebrated in Mexico due to the commemoration of those who defended the student organization that originated in the UNAM in 1929

Through searches for information we managed to realize that in the 20’s, what was previously known as the National University, did not have the opportunity or freedom to make its own decisions since the law indicated that the President of the country together with the Minister of Public Instruction would be responsible for deciding who would be the rector of the university.

At the same time, the university was entering into crisis due to the fact that the staff was reduced since the fees that the students had to cover increased excessively making it impossible for many to continue with their studies.

The affected and dissatisfied students decided to negotiate with the authorities and when they did not reach an agreement, they placed the red and black flag outside the faculty on May 5. Thus, on May 9, the students voted in favor of the strike and invited other faculties to join, in order to pressure the rector and discuss what the authorities were asking for.

To publicize the decision that the strike would continue, a large group of students went to the newspaper offices, but in the early hours of the night, they were interrupted by firefighters and policemen again, the consequence was a large number injured.

Finally, on May 29, President Emilio Portes Gil granted university autonomy, also promised the student community that a law would be approved in this regard in the coming days. It was on July 10, 1929 when the Organic Law was promulgated, with which the National Autonomous University of Mexico was born.
